Hall Effect & TMR upgrades: the tech, for gamers
Every stock DualSense stick is a potentiometer, a part that wears out by design. Here is what is actually inside each option we fit, and why magnetic sticks never drift.
Potentiometer (stock stick)
A metal wiper physically scrapes a carbon resistive track every time the stick moves. The track wears thin, resistance readings shift, and the pad starts registering movement you never made. That is drift, and it is baked into the design. Hiding early wear needs bigger deadzones, which blunts your micro-aim.
Hall Effect stick
The stick moves a magnet over a Hall sensor that reads the angle of the magnetic field across an air gap. Nothing touches, so nothing wears. Centre return stays true for years, which means you can run tighter deadzones, cleaner flicks and zero phantom input even after thousands of hours.
TMR stick
Tunnelling Magnetoresistance reads the field through a nanometre-thin insulating film between two magnetic layers: electrons quantum-tunnel across it, and resistance shifts with the stick angle. Higher signal-to-noise than Hall means finer resolution for pixel-level aim, and it sips power, so the battery lasts noticeably longer.
